Mundane rooms are easily transformed into exciting retreats in the blink of an eye with the right wall covering. There are so many different patterns, colors and textures to choose from. Whatever look you are going for, there is a wallpaper for it!

 
 
 
 
Wallpaper can be very subtle in color and texture, but still make a big impact. For example, the wallpaper above completes this monochromatic space by adding an extra element that pulls everything together. The organic flow of color in the wallpaper creates such a beautiful, delicate and feminine tone! 
 
 
 
 
 
Here is another example of how a subtle textured wallpaper can make a noteworthy impact on a space. This wallpaper creates the illusion of exposed wood paneling with a ceruse finish. Almost looks real, doesn’t it? This is one of many faux pattern wallpapers that are in the market place today. 
 
 
 
 
 
If you crave a little more color in your space, this whimsical Gracie pattern could be perfect! The classic motif takes any space to the next level. There are countless color options to choose from in the collection. Another great thing about this particular design is that it can go with both traditional and contemporary furnishings.
 
 
 
 
 
The unexpected mix of a more traditional print with this contemporary kitchen makes me so happy. Let’s not fail to mention how the fresh color combination used makes this space even more unique and exciting!   
 
 
 
 
 
Lavender is quickly becoming the new neutral and in this space, we can see why! This lavender sets the tone for a fun and inviting powder bath.  This particular Galbraith & Paul pattern is a little more transitional because of its color and large scale. So refreshing!
 
 
 
 
 
One of my favorite wallpaper manufacturers is Phillip Jeffries. Their staple grass cloth creates to-die-for texture. This particular grass cloth is printed with a black geometric pattern, a great contemporary accent in a more transitional space. 
 
 
 
 

Another Phillip Jeffries favorite of mine is the Rivets pattern. This treatment lends itself to a more contemporary and masculine feel than the previous wallpapers we’ve discussed. It would work great as the backdrop for a fantastic piece of colorful art.  

No matter what type of project you‘re working on, incorporating wallpaper is always a great way to add something unique and exciting to the space.

Having traveled and studied abroad, the European influence on interior design and architecture became very evident to me early on in my career. In particular, a French influence continues to be a source of inspiration in my work as a modern day designer.
 

The famous Palace of Versailles in France, once home to King Louis XIV, is a staple for opulent French design that has been marveled over for many generations. The extravagant use of mirrors at the “Grand Galerie” or “The Hall of Mirrors” in Versailles is one of many techniques that has been adopted and mimicked by designers today. The roughly 240 foot grand hall was decorated with seventeen arches, three hundred and fifty seven mirrors, forty three chandeliers and thirty murals painted by the famous French painter Charles Le Brun. 

 
 
 

The Hall of Mirrors stood as a symbol of the economic, political and artistic success of France. It housed historic events such as the wedding of Marie-Antoinette to King Louis XVI in 1770 and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, which ended the First World War.

 On a much smaller scale and in a more refined manner, we can see the influence of using mirrors as they did at Versailles in the dining room below. These mirror-paneled doors were created with antiqued mirror.  Two sconces were placed on either side of the mantel for extra interest.

 
 
  
We also see the use of inset mirrors in more private spaces, like master bedrooms and bathrooms. These gorgeous mirror-paneled cabinets create a lavish atmosphere complemented by a crystal chandelier hanging over the freestanding tub.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
I’m dying over this particular treatment! A pair of doors that hide a bar was turned into something more visually appealing with inset-antiqued mirror resembling a window.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
As seen, the use of mirrors to enhance a space is vast and varied.  The influence spans from grand spaces to small powder rooms, but each has its own grand impact.
 
French inspired furnishings have always been sought after items among interior designers to incorporate into their work. The French are known for their exquisite craftsmanship and use of rich materials in unique and extravagant ways.
 
 
 
 

This show-stopping headboard demonstrates the unique and complex hand carved designs commonly seen on French furnishings.

 
 
 
Classic symbols, like scrolls and acanthus leaves, were commonly used.
 
 
 
 
 
The very popular and always classic Louis XVI, or balloon back chair, fits perfectly in many different styles of décor, from traditional to modern.
 
 
 
 
 
This bombe chest with a marble top displays, “ormolu”, a French technique that uses decorative metal to create intricate designs. This distinctive technique creates added drama to a classic piece.  
 
 
 
 

Another distinctive French technique or staple is the sunburst. The sunburst is a classic French accessory present in many homes today. Many assume they first made their appearance during the reign of the self-proclaimed “Sun King” also known as Louis XIV. However, many antique dealers believe they first surfaced during the French Revolution when riots stormed through and stole from local churches and monasteries. The halos mounted above biblical figures were among the looted items, which were then turned into decorative items and mirrors.

This particular sunburst creates a dramatic statement at the end of a grand hall with its large scale and elaborate detail.
 
 
 

Much less intricate, this modern interpretation of a sunburst still catches the eye with its chic shagreen finish. It is a very different look from the one above, but equally as effective.

 

 
 
This fabulous custom light fixture plays with and emphasizes the layering effect we see in a lot of antique sunbursts. Its depth adds a necessary and exciting layer to this media room!
 
 
 
 
This 17th century gilded sunburst displays similar layered techniques that draw many designers to these unique pieces.  
 
French influences on architecture can be seen through the use of “trumeaus.” A trumeau is an architectural element placed over a mantel that usually consists of a mirror or a decorative panel flanked by two columns.  Trumeaus were commonly used in France during the 16th and 17th centuries.
 
 
 
 
Much like the adaptation of and use of mirrors, we often see more edited versions of the trumeau used today. For example, the trumeau seen above was made using cast stone, an adaptation in material from the originals in 1700’s as seen and discussed below.
 
 
 
 
 
This image, taken from a library in Paris, shows a trumeau from the 16th century. Like many of the originals, this trumeau mirror is made with wood paneling and an inset mirror. Trumeau mirrors were very popular among the French aristocrats who enjoyed sitting in front of a fire, while at the same time being able to see and partake in the events and discussions of those behind them.
 
 
 
 
 
In a similar manner to French furnishings, trumeau mirrors were often decorated with classical motifs like scrolls, garlands, ribbons and acanthus leaves. In keeping with this concept, these classical motifs have been edited down and incorporated into today’s cast stone interpretations.
  

  
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Trumeaus are also used in exterior loggias to create a warm and welcoming focal point. 

Staying outdoors, another French influence comes in the form of boxwoods. Their gardens are full of boxwoods. Complex designs, mostly symmetrical, are designed to symbolize the idea of order over nature. 

Some gardens even tell stories! This one in particular, called “Fickle Love,” is a story about infidelity.  Four fans placed in the corners of the quadrant symbolize the volatile nature of love. Set in between those fans are the horns of a jilted lover, soon to find comfort in love letters sent out of spite to secret lovers of their own. These love letters are represented by the four diamonds located in the center of the quadrant. 

 
 
 
 
 
 

This Dallas residence is a good representation of how French gardens have been translated to modern day landscapes. It may not tell a story, but it follows the idea of symmetry perfectly. The classic treatment is a perfect way to add visual interest to your landscape.

Let’s not forget the extravagant fountains and pools that are so often focal points in French gardens and landscapes. The “Pyramid Fountain” of Versailles, seen below, is based off a drawing by Charles Le Brun and sculpted by Francois Girardon. The four tiered fountain is supported by tritons, crayfish, and dolphins; popular Roman mythological creatures commonly used to decorate fountains.  

  
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
This residence, also located in Dallas, displays two pools or fountains leading up to a main fountain flanked by two cherubs. A similar set up, but on a much larger scale is seen at Versailles. “The Grand Canal,“ seen below, is almost 5,500 feet long, it took 11 years to build and was created by Andre Le Notre. It played host to many nautical spectacles in the summer and ice skating in the winter during Louis XVI’s reign.
 
 
 
 
As displayed, the French influence is very much alive and well in the designs of interiors and exteriors of the modern world. Mostly interpreted in a more refined manner and on a smaller scale, their style has stood the test of time and has proven to be a very classic and timeless look.

Whether you are a traditionalist, or a bit more modern with your holiday décor, it’s that time of the year to start transforming your home into the perfect backdrop for the holidays.  I don’t know about you, but I love going to parties to mingle with friends and family, and to also see their homes decked out in their holiday’s best! There can be so much history in the way someone’s home is dressed for the holidays. Traditions passed down from one generation to the next come alive this time of the year and I love to explore each and every one!
 
 
 
Nothing welcomes friends and family quite like fresh garland and a wreath hanging on the front door. Simple, yet so effective! Once inside, settling your eyes on a perfectly draped stair railing upon entering a home can be most inviting. Pairing traditional green garland with flowers, fruit and lights creates a classic and timeless look. 
 
 
 
If you are more of the modernist, silver or gold willow branches climbing down the stairs sets the mood for a bright and unexpected color palette.  Mix classic holiday colors like whites and silvers with something a little more exciting, like pink, to achieve a more modern look. 
 
 
 
When it comes to the tree, the possibilities are endless! A classic color palette with golds, silvers and whites create a warm environment for present opening and talking amongst the fire. This tree’s oversized tree topper is stunning and finishes it off perfectly. Have fun with your tree topper this year! 
 

 
I’m dying over this take on the traditional Christmas tree.  Refined, yet daring, this tree will be the talk of the party. And look at all those presents! Don’t think this tree is exclusively for those with a more modern array of furniture, it would contrast great against the furniture of more traditional homeowners as well!
 
 
 
Let’s not forget about the table! This black and white chevron table cloth creates a warm, dramatic and whimsical setting for a winter feast. I love this idea for a young family or college graduate looking for a fun way to decorate their table this season.  The casual arrangement of vases and flowers stays in keeping with this more transitional look. Don’t be afraid to mix in black and white this holiday season!
 
 

Another unique idea for the table is a combination of lit branches, pine cones and moss. Simply place them in a glass jar and voila! I love how organic and natural this feels.  If you crave something a little more fresh, pair the arrangement with a few succulents or a potted orchid. A similar arrangement would go great on the coffee table in your outdoor loggia.  

 
 
 
Whether you enjoy the traditional holiday palette or favor a more modern twist, there are endless possibilities to express yourself this season. Don’t be afraid to take risks by mixing some of your old traditions with new ones. Most importantly, have fun and always stick to your personal style!  
 
 

 

]]> 2012-11-30 01:16:22 <![CDATA[Sleep Tight with Fine Design!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/108/Sleep-Tight-with-Fine-Design!/ Ahhh....sleep.  Is there anything more wonderful or refreshing?  And of all the fantastic Objet Petit A's in this world, sleep is very high up on the list, isn't it?  So in our opinion, few things are as important as making sure your bedroom is fabulous.  And no bedroom is complete without a highly inspired bed and super comfy and pretty linens with just the right thread count.
 
 
 
Now, when it comes to picking just the right bed, always put comfort #1 on the wish list.  But that never means you have to compromise on style.  And of course there are so many design directions that are both wonderfully comfortable and functional and thrillingly gorgeous with their design.  For example, I love upholstery on the headboard.  It can be so pretty to look at during the day when the bed is made,  and such a comfortable place to lay your head while all tousled up within the sheets while reading that favorite book at night.  
 
 
 
Although there are too many inspired choices to cover all of them today, one very creative choice is to place a book shelf behind the bed.  And talk about having all your treasured books at just the right handy spot!  But it also looks so interesting.  Mix it with some favorite objects, hang a few paintings or drawings in a creative way and you have a highly individual space that calls your name lovingly every single night at bedtime.  Love it!
 
 
 
Stone can also provide a very interesting backdrop for a beautiful bed.  I often like white linens as it provides a versatile base on which to place fine spreads and comforters and other textiles.  And never forget interesting pillows that both look lovely and serve as nurturing puffs on which to lay a weary head at the end of the day.  Because if you're like me, if you had to pick just one item to take away with you to a far off land....it might just be that fave pillow.   So make sure extra special attention is paid to all these important details necessary for arriving at your ultimate heavenly nest.   
 
 
 
Now, never will I say that inspired bedding is confined to the bedroom.  Quite frankly, a comfortable bed/chaise hybrid can be incredible on a terrace.  Because if there is one thing that is a close second to a peaceful and refreshing nap in your bedroom,  it's a peaceful and refreshing nap with a lemonade or weekend cocktail beside you on the patio.  Wonderful!
 
 
 
So, whether you choose less is more or more is more for your dream bedroom, always know that the investment to get it right is something you will definitely never regret.   And make sure to couple your "beauty sleep" with a beautiful space for the bedroom.  After all,  that wonderful feeling as you wake up rested and energized everyday is...well...priceless.

]]> 2012-07-23 10:40:24 <![CDATA[In the Mix!!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/107/In-the-Mix!!/ One of the most enjoyable things to me in interior design is the limitless mix of materials available to us.  And one must never think that the possibilities have been exhausted, because they simply never will be.  And the human imagination is very powerful and creative indeed.  So that being said, I love, for example,  how a wonderful marble can come into contact with a smooth stainless steel in a kitchen and simply look fabulous.  This mix of two of nature's masterstrokes can be divine. But others can be too.
 
 
 
Speaking of marble and other gorgeous stones, I also think a stunning marble mixed with a beautiful wood cabinet can be....well....an Objet Petit A of the highest order.  Yes, a marble must be carefully considered for function given the stain possibility, but there are many ways to marry function with fabulous in this regard.  And we have become quite expert at it.  Because in the end it needs to be perfectly suited to your lifestyle.
 
 
 
OK, let's step away from the kitchen for a moment and talk about inspired mixes in a bathroom.  For example, a mix of stainless steel and a sculptural shaped tub can be so interesting.  Couple that with a lovely tile and a creative mix of refined color and texture and you can really have a thriller.  This particular tub shown will be as beautiful one hundred years from now as it is today, quite frankly.  It's just gorgeous, but there are many other choices.  And arriving at the right mix to meet your design dream is paramount. 
 
 
 
Now,  a stone or a tasteful pattern floor will always wow me when executed properly.  And again, many choices.  And ultimately quite reasonable in terms of ease of maintenance.  And the visual it can deliver can simply be wonderful.  And speaking of in the mix, a beautiful hardwood in a dining room coming into contact with a marble in an entry can be awe inspiring to every guest who walks through that threshold.   Note the contrast of the picture shown below.  Lovely.
 
 
 
No talk of inspired mix is complete without a subtle and soothing mix of hues and texture in a living room.  A stark white wall can make a genius pattern pop, or a wood grain to deliver a miracle to the eye,  or send an already wonderful piece of art into the stratosphere.   So when you decide to create your perfect environment, set the bar very high in terms of the mix of your favorite materials.  Because the process of creating your dream space should be as joyful as the end result.  And of course joy will never out of style.

]]> 2012-07-19 10:15:16 <![CDATA[Elegant Urns and Vessels!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/106/Elegant-Urns-and-Vessels!/ Some things are simply timeless.  And urns and vessels are often in that category.  For example, there are some urns and vessels on display in the Dallas Museum of Art on the 2nd floor that are as gorgeous today as they were in well, various ridiculously old dates BC!  I marvel at the many shapes and patina, and I want them!  Stunning one and all.
 
 
 
What's so great about urns and vessels is that they can go virtually anywhere, and can be fabulous either empty or filled with flowers, palm leaves, succulents, etc.  And they travel around so effortlessly within fine interior design.  Tired of that urn on the fireplace mantel?  Well, it suddenly becomes fresh and new on the console table down the hall.  I've had urns and vessels for years and they've reinvented themselves many times.  If a cat has nine lives, then an urn or vessel can easily have hundreds.  And in the end I have such sentimental attachment to them.  
 
 
 
OK, I simply love to create interesting arrangements out of differing vessels and urns.  I love to mix shape, color, size,  texture.  And in the end the collection always looks so vividly sculptural and soothing.  And they also serve a function too, as I always know my keys are safely right there inside one of them.  And I do that for selfish reasons too, as there is something about that feel of a time worn glaze on a handmade pottery vessel.  I enjoy just running my hand across it to remember the quality and love put into it when made by hand.
 
 
 
No talk of urns and vessels is complete without talk of fresh flowers too.  Urns and vessels simply adore them.  And frankly I sometimes like that haphazard look , like you just walked in from the garden and placed fresh cut flowers there as an afterthought.  Very elegant, such an Objet Petit A extraordinaire!  So never feel like the flowers have to be too "arranged" all the time. 
 
 
 
Now, no talk of vessels and urns is complete without mentioning exquisite glass objects either.  And they are as varied and lovely as the day is long.  I love to mix and match as many great shapes and sizes as suits my mood.  And they always look so sculptural and inspired.  And they can also be so collectible over time!  There are many many beautiful varieties and virtually every culture proudly makes them ever so lovingly.
 
 
 
In conclusion,  dare to be daring with creative design uses for lovely urns and vessels.  They will give back many times over and for years to come.

Such a simple concept, but a huge statement piece.  And there are literally thousands of options in terms of concept, material, finishes, size and shape.  And that's the fun of it all.  And when it all comes together beautifully,  a fabulous coffee table is....well...fabulous!
 
 

I personally love ease of maintenance when choosing a coffee table.  For example,  I don't want my clients to worry if a glass ring is always lurking around every guest who arrives.  I also want the table to have enough room to add wonderful objects and still have plenty of space left over to actually use it freely. A great coffee table can be a proud stage for sculpture, flowers, books, coral and any and every objet d'art one can imagine.  And if you're one of those people who wants it just right at all times?  Not to worry, me too.   And in the end,  an inspired coffee table should have inspired and lovely things on it.  
 
 
 
Acrylic base tables with glass tops can be a smart choice.  They will blend seamlessly into any decor.  A contemporary look? Wonderful.  A more traditional approach in your design?  They'll look smashing there too.  But remember, no Windex on acrylic.   But other than that, they can be very easy to maintain, and of course that glass top will never cause you anxiety in the glass ring with guests department.  
 
 
 
Another interesting thing about coffee tables is that they can be highly sculptural, and there are many hugely talented artisans who make one-of-a-kind pieces that are well worth the time and money.  In the end,  a sculptural one-off table can provide a huge impact for a room.  And of course it's always nice to have something no one else has.  And trust me when I tell you you will get many comments.  Glass tops are usually the best bet to make sure the sculptural base shines underneath.
 
 
 
Wood and metals always marry well together.  Yes, coasters will be required, but they are a wonderful marriage of materials.   Your favorite coffee table books will look incredible against the grain of fine woods.  And as you know, I will always sing the praises of incorporating natural elements into fine interior design.  So,  leave a bit of room for a huge shell filled with succulents, or a stunning handmade piece of pottery such as a vase,  bowl or urn filled with orchids or other fresh flowers.  Gorgeous.  
 
 
 
OK,  by now you know that I am a huge fan of the coffee table.  But in closing, don't be afraid to pair like items for a dramatic twin set of tables side by side.  Or don't be afraid to give new life to a beautiful old architectural relic or natural element redesigned as stunning coffee table all your own.  Because in the end,  it can be an Objet Petit A of the highest order, and something you and your family and friends will enjoy every time you walk past it.

]]> 2012-07-09 09:57:04 <![CDATA[Planted firmly in fine design!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/103/Planted-firmly-in-fine-design!/ If you already know me, you know that I love striking uses of natural elements in my design work. And that is particularly true with elegant uses of plants.   Mixed with shells, coral, crystals or stone?  Amazing.  And they almost always receive a double-take look from guests.  And of course you can almost never gone wrong with the natural elements. 
 
 
 
Now for a few of my all-time favorites.   I love succulents.  Easy maintenance, and always interesting to look at.  Rosemary is fabulous, and the smell and use for cooking doesn't hurt either.  Lovely.  Orchids are always show stoppers,  and white ones particularly so.  Bonsai can be interesting as well,  and all of these have fantastic sculptural traits as well.  
 
 
 
As you know, the kitchen will always be that room where people congregate.  I know we do, so it deserves special attention.  And plant life works so well in the kitchen.  It's probably the best spot for that rosemary mentioned above.  So clean smelling, so wonderful on salmon!  And rosemary is infinitely easy to sculpt into interesting shapes for an elegant look.  Basil is also fabulous to keep planted in or near the kitchen.  But all in all plant life gives a room a calming lived in look, and I love it. 
 
 
 
For those of you who have visited The Shop here on Dragon, you know that we always have a creative use of plants at any given time.   And of course part of the fun of it for us is to surprise the viewer with a mix or match you might previously think unlikely.   And I carry this forward in my interior design work as well.  But one thing that is always important to me is this wonderful concept of easy maintenance.  Orchids, for example, need water only once every 7 to 10 days or so.  Succulents are even more camel-like, and are the perfect plant if you travel often.  But all in all they each give a warm and inviting visual in your home and in fine interior design.
 
 
 
So whether in any room, in any configuration and with virtually any mix and match,  inspired plant life in the home can definitely be one of life's great Objet Petit a's!  And in the end isn't it just...well...gorgeous!?

]]> 2012-07-02 10:51:40 <![CDATA[White Hot!!!!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/102/White-Hot!!!!/ As they say, less can almost always be more.  And that's particularly true of the color white.  It's all at once elegant, fresh, new.....gorgeous!  And let's not forget timeless.  Throw in the fact that it works with virtually anything and everything else and white can be one of the ultimate Objet Petit a's.
 
 
 
Now, I know what you may be thinking right now, and that is that white is hard to live with.  Yes, it does require a bit of tender loving care.  However, with sophisticated protective fabric treatments of today, it can really be quite user friendly.  And oh the drama it creates.  Fantastic!  Mix in a bit of color here and there and it really is special.
 
 
 
You know how "they" also say that a white car is the easiest to maintain because it stays cool and doesn't show dirt?  Well, the same can be said of white when used in the kitchen.  And talk about cool!   It can be the perfect backdrop for tile, stone, wonderful appliances, flowers...and of course food.  And I love it how white can make the grain of a wonderful wood floor pop.  Truly fantastic actually.
 
 
 
Another great thing about white is the versatility of it all.  Quite frankly, it can work in any room.  In the bedroom, for example, it can give one the feeling of floating in a cloud.  And I don't know about you, but floating in a cloud makes me sleeping right this second.  So I love white in a room where you...well...sleep! And never underestimate the timeless beauty of fine quality white linens for the bed.  Ahhh....glorious. 
 
 
 
OK, back to this thought nagging at you that white can be hard to live with.  Not when you plan well.  For example, a white sofa will stay infinitely pristine when both the fabric is treated for protection and when the soles of shoes can't touch the fabric at the floor level.  So a sofa with legs and no fabric around the bottom can work a miracle and render scuffs along that line obsolete.  Yes, a little common sense in fine interior design will never go out of style.
 
 
 
 
Yet another benefit of choosing white (or sister hues thereof) is this "never underestimate" this thing called versatility.  With white as the backdrop, one can update with new pillows, new objets d'art, colorful accent pieces, flowers, pottery, porcelain, jade, succulents, coral, etc.  Quite frankly, it's endless.  So after the core design is in place, one can tweak the accessories and start fresh again without much added expense for years to come.  And don't get me started on tone on tone whites for wall paint, trim, gloss vs. matte, etc. Fabulous. 
 
In closing, remember to never shy away from whites if you love them.  When done properly, white is always right on point in very fine interior design.

Is it just me or have you too noticed that Architectural Digest has become particularly fabulous lately?!  Yes, I've always loved it, but it's taken on a wonderful new air of fresh under Editor in Chief Margaret Russell....all while keeping the legendary class and elegance so artfully created by former Editor in Chief Paige Rense.   Bravo Margaret, it's lovely and always so on point!  And it's a visual paradise of fine interior design.  I get excited when I see a new issue, and I definitely stop whatever I'm doing to thoroughly study every page. 
 
 
There are many things I love about Architectural Digest,  and not the least of which is the diversity of every issue.  All in all it's the perfect balance of old and new, modern and traditional.  And never boring in any way.  Love to read how projects evolved over time with clients.  The current issue, for example, showcases Oscar de la Renta's fabulous gardens in the Dominican Republic.  It also delivers a fun read and visual tour of the vacation home of Jonathan Adler and his partner.  And I love the story about the 13 year evolution of the gorgeous modern house in Los Angeles.  Don't miss it!
 
 
 
Let's get back to Margaret Russell for a minute.  First of all, by all accounts she's a lovely person.  And it's obvious she's infinitely talented and ambitious.  I noticed a rather immediate change in the look and feel of the publication.  And she did it with such reverence for what I loved about it before.  For example, I didn't want to ever throw away one before.  And I never want to throw one away now.  They are somehow art and wonderful information all at once!  And how do they deliver issues that are ultimately timeless one after another??  Amazing.
 
 
 
Now, in a world full of fabulous design publications, Architectural Digest  is by all accounts the gold standard.  Don't get me wrong, I love them all.  But in AD I feel like I'm engulfed in inspiration, style, elegance and a treasure hunt on every page.  I mean, even the ads are artful, aren't they?  After reading the current issue,  I was reminded loud and clear that AD is an Objet Petit A of the highest order!
 
 
 
In closing,  thank you Margaret Russell and Architectural Digest  for being such a thrilling barometer of what's wonderful about our industry in every single thing you do in the magazine.  It really is so special.

]]> 2012-06-14 10:54:18 <![CDATA[Very Mirror Minded!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/100/Very-Mirror-Minded!/ As some of you may know,  I do love mirrors.  But it's not simply because of their reflective surfaces.  Certainly a strategically placed mirror can open up a space or add drama, but I also love all the shapes, sizes, frames and other details!  They are, quite frankly, an endless source of creativity for us here. 
 
 
 
Mirrors are one of my very favorite things to shop for, and I am almost always surprised by new and exciting choices.  Both old and new mirrors can be simply stunning, and I must admit my heart begins to race a bit when a client and I round a corner and see something we've never seen before.  And trust me when I tell you I make quick work of a purchase if I see something I know is  inspired and rare.  As you know,  I do love the treasure hunt...and with mirrors it's extra special.
 
 
 
Another fascinating thing about mirrors is their close collaboration with sculpture.  I have seen gorgeous displays of the human imagination wrapped around a mirror.  And when it all comes together seamlessly and in a beautiful and elegant way, then in my book it's an Objet Petit A extraordinaire!  
 
 
 
OK, let's just agree to agree that some of the modern interpretations on the mirror are pretty special.  Gold, silver, plaster, carved wood, lacquer, creative metal work or an innovative mix thereof?  Fabulous.  And I love to place just such an inspired object in the perfect spot so that it is interesting from any angle. 
 
 
 
By about now you know that mirrors are quite flexible in their use.  And trust me a mirror is not simply a thing to look at oneself one last time before leaving home anymore.  Mirrors may now be used as focal points and art objects over fireplaces, in dining rooms, as wonderful decorative elements in your most formal or casual rooms.  And they always add a punch of wow factor.  
 
 
 
Quite frankly, I can't think of anyone in my career who hasn't loved mirrors.   And mirrors have a place front and center in very fine interior design.   Personally,  I believe they'll always be highly collectible for the long term, and infinitely lovely to live with in the interim.  And whether old or new, shiny or with a patina from a life well-lived,  I will always be on the lookout for that next "oh my!" moment when I see a lovely mirror just waiting for me to find it.

]]> 2012-06-08 12:10:30 <![CDATA[A Legendary Chair Affair!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/99/A-Legendary-Chair-Affair!/ Throughout the history of design,  the chair stands out as a particular inspiration.  It has been the object of many a designer's creative muscle, and there is no shortage of stunning designs.  However, a few rise to the top of the design pyramid, and they are as lovely today as they were when they were created.
 
 
 
The Barcelona Chair is one such brilliant design.  It was exclusively designed for the German Pavillion and hosted by Barcelona, Spain in 1929.  A collaboration between the famous Bauhaus architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and his longtime partner and companion, architect Lilly Reich resulted in this inspired and comfortable design.  Stunning.  This chair looks fabulous no matter where you put it, and I adore them.   
 
 
 
Oh my,  the Eames Chair.  Could it be any more classic?  I love this cool design.  It's one of those things where age can actually be a friend to it.  It was designed by Charles and Ray Eames as a chair and ottoman for their friend Billy Wilder, the director of "Some Like it Hot" and "Sunset Blvd" in 1956.  Production began soon thereafter and, if you have one, cherish it and treat it with care and admiration!  Highly collectible. 
 
 
 
Can we talk Le Corbusier LC2 Armchairs?!  Fabulous.  And surprisingly comfortable in spite of the compact design.  And what a creation it is.  Designed by La Corbusier in 1928, this prized chair is...well...a prize.  Again, highly collectible and a marvel of design, way before its time.  Still thrilling to look at today and a great example of how less can be so much more! 
 
 
 
 
The Vitra plastic chair designs by Eames were very bold during their birth year of 1960.  They're still so today.  And "forward thinking" is an understatement for these cherished finds.  So simple, so unusual, so wonderful.  Very sought after.   These chairs are a design powerhouse and when I see one of these  in person I'm always impressed by their incredible presence through simplicity. 
 
 
 
The Wassily Chair is one of the most recognizable objects anywhere.  And for good reason.  Designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925-26, this chair was originally known as the Model B3 Chair.  Many think this chair was designed by the painter Wassily Kandinsky....not so.  But this black leather chair is certainly art indeed!
 
 
 
The Bertoia Diamond Chair 191 was designed by Italian born Harry Bertoia in the 1950's.  This sculptural and genius design is a brilliant marvel of space, form and function.  Often cited as one of the most incredible designs of the 20th Century, and rightfully so.  I just love them, and I want one!  Simply incredible and a wonderful celebration of the human imagination. 
 
 
OK, no talk of famous chairs can pass without mentioning The Egg Chair by Arne Jacobson from 1958.  Designed for the Radisson SAS hotel in Copenhagen, it was believed to have been inspired by Eero Saarinen's "Womb Chair" from which it gains some traits.  However, The Egg Chair is a much more complete design.  This chair is arguably one of the top 5 most famous chairs ever designed.  And amazingly functional and comfortable!  
 
Thank you for taking a tour with me today on the history of amazing chairs.  Each and every one is an Objet Petit A extraordinaire, isn't it?  And you know that term "Musical Chairs?"   Well, these chairs certainly make beautiful creative music in my book.  Wonderful.

]]> 2012-06-04 09:45:25 <![CDATA[Daring Dining Rooms!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/98/Daring-Dining-Rooms!/ I love a beautiful dining room.  But not necessarily those that are simply admired from afar and never see extensive use.  I like a dining room to be well-lived-in!  Remember those mothers from childhood who wouldn't dare allow anyone to enter the carefully coiffed room?  Not anymore.  Dining rooms should not be off limits, they should be enjoyed daily!
 
 
 
A wonderful dining room should be an infinitely functional space for your friends and family.  If you can't sit down and feel relaxed,  then a mistake has been made.  And how valuable is eating together with family every night?  Priceless.  So make sure your dining space is carefully curated to include everything that makes you happy.   After all, it's where some of your most wonderful family memories will be made.
 
 
 
Now,  never did I ever say that a functional room needs to be a dowdy one.  High style can be fabulous AND comfortable.  Rich woods, sumptuous leathers, stunning art, lovely paint colors, exquisite floors.  It can all come together into one very special place!
 
 
 
Another great thing about dining rooms and the overall experience thereof is that they can be thoroughly modern or profoundly traditional and still be...well...timeless!  And never underestimate the power of a showstopper chandelier.   And contrary to some mothers of yore who preached the "don't touch my dining room!" mantra,  it is now one of the first rooms any and everyone should be invited into with ease.  We do at our house,  and I highly recommend it to our clients.
 
 
 
Oh, I do love books.  And they work beautifully in a dining room too.  And a fab rug never hurt anyone either...so make sure to let the imagination have free rein when designing just the right dining room.  And never EVER let yourself purchase chairs that are anything less than ridiculously comfortable.  Again, function and comfort must always be paramount!  And trust me when I tell you that a comfortable chair will always be an Objet Petit a!
 
 
 
Another thing I love is a booth...and they can be designed to filled with both character, design and comfort.  After all, Sunday newspapers were created specifically with booths in mind!  A combination booth and dining chair configuration can be lovely and inviting.
 
 
 
Another trend that is here to stay is dining room as family room in combinations of all shapes and sizes.  A fireplace and den-like seating area for the whole family by the kitchen as you prepare meals?  Fantastic.  A long table right in the middle of a great room for meals and conversation?  Wonderful. 
 
 
 
OK, by now you know that I am a big fan of inspired dining spaces.  They are simply delightful to design and create.  I'll never tire of it, and I always have about 20 new ideas racing around in my head.  And I wouldn't have it any other way.  So don't you dare shy away from using your own dining room daily.  It should, quite frankly,  be one of the highest traffic areas in your home.

]]> 2012-05-23 10:35:36 <![CDATA[Mantel Mastery!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/97/Mantel-Mastery!/ You know how "they" say a focal point is so important.  Well,  an inspired fireplace mantel may well have been what they were talking about.  I love them, and their design, material and decoration can be as infinitely varied as there are homes.   I love to devote special care to them, because they are definitely a focal point you and your family will enjoy more than most.
 
 
 
Now, let's make one thing clear.  The decoration of a mantel is one of my favorite things.  Love it.   They are like art installations in a way for me, and it's a place in your home that virtually everyone will notice.   And a little bit of visual drama and wow factor never hurts. 
 
 
 
Another great thing about a mantel is that they are accepting of almost anything.  A beautiful mirror?  Perfect.  A gorgeous piece of art?  Wonderful.  Fresh flowers?  Always a good idea.    Couple this with striking objects on the top of the mantel and it's simply a wonderland of fine design ideas.  
 
 
 
Make no mistake, a fireplace and mantel should never be limited to only a living room or family room.  They are fabulous in bedrooms!  Trust me when I tell you they are simply splendid to fall asleep next to.  Oh my.  And if designed properly, they can also provide comfortable seating in the process.  Yes, all in all one of life's great Objet Petit a's!
 
 
 
OK, a discussion about fireplace mantels cannot be concluded without talking about fabulous materials.  And there are many.  I personally love stone,  brick,  marble, or a combination thereof.   I also love custom designed mantels if the budget allows.  Couple this with inspired furnishings and other design elements and "they" were right....it's a glorious focal point indeed!
 
 
 
In conclusion, have you noticed how beloved family pets almost always gravitate to right in front of the fireplace mantel?   Why, you may ask?  Well, the answer is they are no dummy....they know a great thing when they see it too.

And prepare yourself for the lovely comments, because virtually everyone loves a fabulous entry hall.
 
 
 
Another thing I love about entries is that they are as infinitely functional as they are gorgeous.  If designed right, you'll not only impress your guests....but you'll also never wonder where your keys or cell phone are again!  An inspired entry can be the perfect catch-all room while it's looking perfectly splendid in the process.  And function is key,  because rooms are made to be lived in, not just looked at.   A lovely bowl on an exquisite console table can double as both Objet Petit a  and hiding place for all those often-missing treasures.  Hello beloved iPhone....there you are!
 
 
 
As you know, I love a mix of elements, and an entry is a perfect blank canvas for a smashing collection of them.  The floor, the ceiling, the lighting, the sconces, iron mixed with wood, stone mixed with plaster, etc. Oh my, I get excited just thinking about all the possibilities.  And for whatever reason, I don't get "writer's block" either.  The thrill of what just might be possible still keeps me in utter joy from start to finish in my design work.  
 
 
 
OK, if you follow this Blog you know me by now.  And you know that I don't mind injecting a splash of color now and then.  If it brings a smile to the face of the entrant (including you and your family), then it's serving just the right purpose.   And if you like a splash of color here and there, an entrance hall can be a nice place for it.  And a little WOW FACTOR never hurt anyone!
 
 
 
Now in the not-too-distant past,  entries were generally all about simple square or round spaces.  Not anymore.  If you want a fireplace in your entry, then you should have one.  If you want a sweeping view  from fab front door to picturesque pool in your entry, then you should have that as well.  The more it resembles your design dreams, the better. 
 
 
 
In conclusion, another thing I insist upon when designing an entry is that it simply must provide an "ahhh" moment for all who pass through it.  After all, it's often the first place you say hello to a beloved family member coming home, and the last place you say "I love you" on your way out.  So it simply must be special.   And speaking of that,  remember to also say "I love you" this weekend for Mother's Day.  And trust me, as a Mom myself, it simply will always be life's single best Objet Petit a.

We had an excellent turnout, and the lovely wine and catering by Del Frisco's was the perfect complement to lively conversations about interior design, what's new, favorite new projects.....and wonderful magazines by Modern Luxury!  If you haven't seen the new Interiors-Texas magazine, make a point to do so.  It will come out once per quarter, and it's gorgeous and filled with pictures and profiles you'll simply never see anywhere else.  The top people from Modern Luxury/Interiors-Texas were here, and we were delighted to host it with them. We love Editor-in-Chief Connie Dufner, Publisher Blake Stephenson, Director of Marketing Rachel Watkins and everyone else there.  All so professional and forward-thinking. 
 
 
 
 
 
A side benefit of staging this party is that it gave us an opportunity to rework the entire showroom.  Those who know me know how much I love that process, and I work with the most lovely team at our showroom. So everyone pitched in to make it a really special environment...and a really special party.  Fabulous!  So,  now we have many new things in The Shop as well, so you simply must drop by as our guest sometime. For example,  the floral watercolors now on display?  Oh my.  Stunning.    But we've added much more that we're proud of too.  So don't be a stranger.
 
 
  
 
 
This was also our first party since announcing that Laura Lee Clark Interior Design, Inc. is the new stocking dealer for Niermann-Weeks for this area.  And of course we're thrilled by it.  I love their craftsmanship and design.  So there was a definite buzz about that at the party as well.   The line is clearly one that causes a double-take.  Wonderful pieces!
 
 
 
 
 
Yes, the last picture is one of some gorgeous and talented girls that I work with daily...and that I have a particular fondness for.  And John and I want to thank our entire team (Candace, Lindsay, Kari, Pam and Brooke) for helping pull off such a wonderful party for Modern Luxury's new Interiors-Texas!  We enjoyed it.  And thanks to one and all for coming and making it very splendid indeed.

Now, the other thing I'm charged up about is Modern Luxury's newest addition to their prestigious publications.  Ladies and gentlemen,  Interiors-Texas is here!  Trust me when I tell you it is particularly well done.  Their publications always grab my attention...and keep it...from page to page.  I don't know how they do it,  I'm just so glad they do.   And Interiors-Texas proves that everything is actually BETTER in Texas too.  Glamour and comfort oozes off each page.  All in all,  Interiors-Texas celebrates the best of the best from around our very special state.  And in the process it all rises to head-of-class status for anywhere!   And as you know from Modern Luxury, they go that extra distance to ensure that each and every article and picture is both an informational and visual knockout on very fine design.  I personally love their brilliant layout in the magazines.  The way the images float on the page, the way the text is so easy to read.  It all rises to art form for me, and I simply never want to throw one away. 
 
 
 
Here's another great thing about every issue of Modern Luxury....it's always such a celebration of the powers of the human imagination!   There is no junk here, just page after page of the new and the wonderful.   And as I'm reading and flipping through it I'm thinking "Wow, someone really cares about what's presented, and HOW it's presented."  Very special...and never a dull moment.  Sit me down in a quiet place with a cup of coffee and the newest Modern Luxury's Interiors-Texas....and I am in Heaven.  It's now on my must-read list.  Make sure to visit their website at www.modernluxury.com/interiors-texas or pick up the latest issue and see for yourself.  Neither will ever disappoint.

]]> 2012-04-19 09:27:47 <![CDATA[Light at the end of the....sculpture?]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/92/Light-at-the-end-of-the....sculpture?/ Forget the light at the end of the tunnel,  I want it over my dining room table or in your kitchen or study now!  As you know, I love chandeliers.  They're such a wonderful mood builder and conversation piece, and of course nowhere do they shine quite like they do when they're artistic and unusual.  So today I want to celebrate the art of merging lighting with sculpture.  And of this you can be certain....the world is full of stunning choices.  There is literally no limit to shape, and no limit to wow factor when you arrive at just the right look. 
 
 
Let's just agree to agree that I am very particular about chandeliers.  I want them to be a knockout, but I also want them to be high on the list for function.  For example, you should not have to squint to see the person sitting next to you.  And as you know from previous Blogs,  the right light is a sort of art form too.  And you know those times when you're a guest and you see yourself in the mirror in a room and you look...well, really good?!  This does not usually happen by accident.  And the right light on the right sculpture-inspired chandelier is simply one of life's great Objet Petit a's in this regard.   
 
 
 
Now, don't be afraid to inject a huge dose of your own personality when it comes to your choice.  If a chandelier doesn't jump out and grab you as perfect, don't settle.  You'll never regret it.  I have some that bring me as much joy today as they did the day they were installed.  And a guest or new client making a comment about any of my installations will never get old for me.  So thank you, you know who you are!

Although obviously more of a process, I have been known to find an unusual sculpture piece and then TURN it into a lighting source.  I also love gorgeous vessels that travel with me through the creative process to take on a new life as a lamp.  And I have seen some simply spectacular chandeliers made out of the most unusual objects that you wouldn't expect like tree limbs or one-of-a-kind art pieces.  Allan Knight here in Dallas is particularly genius with this art form.  Really special.   And when all is said and done, I will always enjoy this journey that ends with a space that together we love, and that is all your own.

]]> 2012-04-12 10:11:37 <![CDATA[Magic Carpets!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/91/Magic-Carpets!/ You know that old tale about hopping on a flying carpet that could take you to magical places?  Well, it's actually sort of true in interior design too.  Why?  Well, because a wonderful carpet or fine rug can simply transform a space....and sometimes the total impact really is like magic.   Oh, and how I love carpets and rugs for some spaces!   In my previous post I spoke of the power of pattern for wood, brick or stone floors, and patterns in rugs are absolutely endless as well. 
 
 
 
 
 
Now, if there is one thing I adore, it is comfort.   Yes, a space must be glorious to look at....but it must be comfortable.  And an inspired carpet or rug should provide just that.  It must be visually wonderful, but it also must be a friend to your  feet.  And ease of maintenance must be factored in as well.  As I always say, fine interior design must be carefully coupled with the way you actually live.  Small children?  Maybe bye bye white carpets.  Beloved hairy animals? Maybe bye bye to solid black.  And that's OK, because there are thousands of  choices anyway. 
 
 
 
 
 
For rugs and carpets,  I don't think it's ever a good idea to limit oneself to the oriental variety.  Yes, they are gorgeous and I love them, but I also love geometric patterns to add to the mix.  And carpet and rug designers are so creative now.  Love them! And many patterns are designed with beauty, comfort and ease of maintenance in mind.  Put simply, they don't show dirt and are easy to clean when they do.  That alone is one of life's great Objet Petit a's.
 
 
 
 
 
 
I also love an occasional mix of animal print.  Zebra has withstood the test of time as a classic, for example.  And many carpet and rug designers are incorporating tasteful new takes on the animal print in their manufactured or handmade rugs.  Of course it's never necessary to make design elements too matchy, and animal prints as a backdrop are so versatile in this regard. 
 
 
 
 
 
Well, I hope you enjoyed our "magic carpet ride" today.  The key is to have fun with it,  and to remember to make sure the end result is a very clear expression of you and the way you and your family live.  Beauty  mixed with quality,  comfort and function will never go out of style.

]]> 2012-04-06 10:21:29 <![CDATA[Pattern Power]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/90/Pattern-Power/ What is it about a beautiful pattern?  The elegance of it can be stunning.   But of course it must be just right, not pattern simply for the sake of it.  It must make sense.  And as you know, I love the beauty that can be delivered by an inspired floor....and pattern can work so well when planning floors for a notable space.
 
 
Black and white will probably never go out of style.  It is elegant and timeless and works so well with any other color.  I love the impact of it as well.  Black and white floors were as gorgeous centuries ago as they are today.  And talk about wow factor.  And in the end a black and white patterned floor can be so infinitely versatile.
 
 
 
But black and white is obviously not the only choice....not by a long shot.  A gorgeous brick in a pattern is a wonderful look as well.  And ultimately so easy to maintain.  Brick in a pattern coupled with  woods and iron and other texture all add up to a thrilling overall Objet Petit a!  I will never get bored with all the wonderful possibilities!
 
 
 
Now, can we talk round rooms?  Although ultimately an art form, a round entry mixed with a pattern floor will always have me at hello.  Exquisite.  It must be well-planned and well-executed, but in the end a round room is so worth it.  It can be all at once completely classic,  and yet thoroughly modern.  And it can set a stage and tone for a most wonderful space beyond.  Stunning! 
 
 
 
OK, it must be noted that pattern does not have to be complicated to be inspired and timeless.  A simple pattern in a contemporary setting can be quite spectacular as well.  And of course history can repeat itself and be a wonderful celebration of it in a contemporary space.  And in that regard,  I have been known to incorporate new twists from classic periods such as Art Deco when choosing just the right pattern for a space.  And that's the beauty of such classic periods of fine design, they keep on giving.   To me, wonderful design will always be....well, wonderful design!

]]> 2012-04-02 10:42:36 <![CDATA[Surrounded by the light!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/89/Surrounded-by-the-light!/ Ask any artist in the world and they'll tell you that light is probably the most important thing of all.  Put their work on the wall with improper light and the most gorgeous piece can be, well...less than gorgeous.  Put it in the proper light and watch it pop into full glory.  And of course watch the artist smile!  But the reason I bring this up today is because the same holds true for fine interior design.  Light is just so important, and I am always very respectful of it in my work.  I love beautiful lighting!
 
 
 
 
 
Now, when creating just the right light for your space, the fun part is that there are so many brilliant  choices.  And the human imagination is just so so clever, and the craftsmanship simply exquisite.  And working through lighting decisions and getting it just right alongside my clients is one of my favorite Objet Petit'a's! And it pays off many times over through daily enjoyment and appreciation of its powers.  And the quality of fine light fixtures available is something I always marvel at.  Quite frankly, it's stunning in breadth...thrillingly diverse. 
 
 
 
 
Now, lighting must be all at once functional and beautiful, and I am crazy about all the gorgeous shapes and colors and textures available.   Some light fixtures are truly art pieces or sculpture at the same time they're functioning as lovely light sources.  And many use the most fabulous materials.  The journey to find just the right pieces with my clients will always be so enjoyable for all concerned.  It's a wonderful treasure hunt that is so important to the overall look and feel.  And to get it right always pays high dividends.
 
 
 
 
 
So in conclusion, always remember to make sure your completed design project sees the light!  You'll be so glad special attention was given to this important design element.   And you'll appreciate the elegance of it when you're with just the right book, or with just the right guests, or with just the right relaxing glass of wine.  Because quite frankly, getting the lighting right has the ability to make a room quite magical indeed.

]]> 2012-03-28 11:40:41 <![CDATA[Ironing out the details!!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/88/Ironing-out-the-details!!/ Let's just agree at the outset that the human imagination is a pretty remarkable thing.  And in that regard, I have had the pleasure of working with some of the most incredible craftsmen and artists.  And actually, craftsmen ARE artists.  This I know for sure in seeing them work so beautifully at their craft.   And Dallas is a wonderland of fantastic sources for making any and everything gorgeous.  But I want to focus in particular on iron stair railings today, because they can be so inspired and lovely!
 
 
 
 
 
What's so great about iron stair railings is that they also get more beautiful with age, and they are one of the most useful sculptures ever created.  Twisting and turning into elegant patterns limited only by the imagination, the end result can often be one of life's most lovely objet petit a's!  I simply love it when a client decides to work with me on a statement staircase and railing.  And at Laura Lee Clark we love to make it fabulous, but of course with refined elegance and suited to the way you live.
 
 
 
 
 
Another wonderful thing about beautiful iron work is how well it merges with other materials.  An iron stair railing coming into contact with a exquisite marble floor?  Stunning.  An iron stair railing coming into contact with hardwood floors?  Oh my....just fabulous.  But only if done properly, and it must be done with forethought and an inspired design.  At Laura Lee Clark Interior Design, you know for certain that we know just the right balance so that it withstands the test of time....and all while you love living with it day in and day out.

Is it just me, or is spring early?  Yes, I think it is.  But I'm not complaining, as it's one of my favorite seasons as an interior designer.  First of all, the colors!  Aren't they gorgeous?!  And always so renewing and inspiring.  Every single spring I notice colors that I have never seen before.  Mother Nature's palette is always the most inspired and timeless.  And she's always in fashion.  But what I also love about spring is that it's the best time to start new design projects.  Yes, spring cleaning can also apply to interior design. 
 
 
 
At Laura Lee Clark Interior Design,  the part that is so enjoyable for us is that feeling of new beginnings for a design project. A clean slate, starting fresh, a blank canvas.  And oh the possibilities.  It gives me a creative thrill every single time.  And the spirit of spring wraps all of these feelings up into one wonderful whole so well.  Certainly that beautiful space you always dreamed of may be created during any time of year, but starting in the spring is the cherry on top.  And of course pleasant weather conditions can relegate construction delays to virtually naught.  And that alone is one of life's great Objet Petit A's!

]]> 2012-03-13 09:34:49 <![CDATA[Written in Stone....]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/86/Written-in-Stone..../ Nature is one of those things in life that will never go out of style.  And nature produces the most wonderful stone for use in the design of your home, both inside and out.  Slate roofs, for example, have a reputation of being terribly expensive.  And of course they certainly can be initially.  But they also last so much longer than traditional materials.  They are known to last 30 years and beyond.  And in fact, some in Europe have literally been protecting their occupants for centuries.   And looking gorgeous in the process, I might add.   So if you look at it that way, it can be argued that a fine slate roof is quite a bargain in the end. 
 
 
 
 
Slate roofs are also one of those things in life that actually get better with age.  Just look at the exquisite patina on some of these.  Simply gorgeous, and only nature can deliver this kind of beauty.  When used for roofs, there are certainly structural guidelines that one must take into account given the added weight, but when completed and done properly a slate roof is one of life's great Objet Petit a's!  I just love them, and at Laura Lee Clark Interior Design we are here for you when you are ready to think about the use of slate or stone for your own home.
 
 
 
 
 
Another inspired place to use slate or stone, of course, is within your outdoor space design.  We love the use of stone leading from the outside into the inside as well, such as from a pool area leading into a family entertainment room.  This delivers a powerful punch visually at the same time it is so functional and easy to maintain.  All important elements when designing a space....and of course highly user friendly when a pool area or other water elements are involved.

]]> 2012-03-07 08:05:27 <![CDATA[Turn up the heat for a fabulous kitchen!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/85/Turn-up-the-heat-for-a-fabulous-kitchen!/ Why is it that everyone congregates in the kitchen?  I don't know, but isn't it fun?  There is something infinitely fascinating about a kitchen...particularly if done well.  And kitchens are no longer just for cooking, but an all around wonderful place to convene and enjoy yourself with family and friends. I simply love a kitchen that captures the entire essence of a family and the way they live.
 
 
Whether modern, traditional, or anywhere in between,  I have always enjoyed designing kitchen areas that celebrate the joys of food preparation and family gatherings.  But make no mistake, gone are the days that it's merely a room to prepare a meal.  Yes, it should have every convenience for today's "foodies" to implement their own particular genius, but I think it also must be a comfortable place to hang out!  And warning,  if you're not a foodie yet, watch The Food Network for an hour or two on any given day and you soon will be.  It's definitely one of life's great Objet Petit a's!   And I have found in recent years that most clients want extra special treatment for their kitchens....because in the end it's the gift that keeps on giving.
 

 
You know by now from reading my Blog that I often believe that rules are open to be broken.  However,  two rules may always be in style....lots of counter space and a central island in a kitchen are fabulous!  A well-thought-out kitchen should be all at once stylish, functional and comfortable too.  We have designed many of them, and we love the process every single time.  So make sure to call us at Laura Lee Clark Interior Design for inspired planning and design for your perfect new kitchen!
 
 
 
OK, you probably know that a modern kitchen should have seating....and lots of it.  Trust me when I tell you that it will be lovingly used.  Build it and they will come.   Some of our most cherished family memories are created while we're all in the kitchen talking about our day as one of us is preparing a meal.  So seating must take center stage.  I am also a stickler for easy maintenance whenever possible.  And newsflash....stainless steel appliances are now available finger proof!  And what a relief, as they can be wonderful to live with.  But whites will probably always be elegant and functional as well. 
 
 
 
In conclusion, always remember that an inspired kitchen is one that is a spectacular backdrop for not only all your favorite kitchen utensils and gorgeous food, but also a backdrop for creating wonderful family memories one glorious day at a time.  And nothing will ever be more important than that.

Yes, if you know me you know I do love to design a luxurious and comfortable bedroom.  After all, it is the room each of us ultimately spends the most time in, so it should be inspired.  We have designed many, and we never tire of coming up with fresh new ideas.  It's one of life's ultimate and very special Objet Petit a's!  And comfort is paramount. 
 
 
 
 
 
Oh, how I do love designing a living room as well...start to finish and everywhere in between.  And the excitement I feel when a client selects us to deliver this very special space for their families will never get old for me.  It's a room where family histories are created, and I take it very seriously.  However,  it's also a very enjoyable process for everyone across the board.  The journey getting there together is the best part of it. 
 
 
 
Some of the homes I've designed have had the most wonderful entrance halls.  And I love  them.  Talk about making first impressions....these spaces should be elegant welcoming.  Entering one should deliver that wonderful "ahh" moment for you, your family and guests.  And I love designing them and making sure they are special rooms to welcome your world into your home day in and ay out.
 

 
Dining spaces also excite me....whether inside or outside.  And they are infinitely important to get right, because if the walls could talk in these important spaces, they should tell the story of your family and be true to the way you live.  I have designed many outdoor dining areas, and they are those "build it and they will come" rooms.  Trust me, they are like kitchens....as you and your family and guests will always gravitate to them when completed.

We always give very special attention to ceilings.  The sheer expanse of them requires that special attention is given to ensure the desired end result.   Whether highly textural, extremely polished or anywhere in between, it's important that you end up with a ceiling you and your family simply love for each room of your home.  And it can be a highly inspired palette on which to work.  And it pays off in wonderfully visual rewards.

What is it about water?  I just love it.  And I have a particular affinity for a gorgeous pool.  A great one can deliver peace of mind like few other things in your home.  And talk about a wonderful avenue to let your imagination go into overdrive!  And in the end, a pool should have your personality in every detail.  
 
 
 
I know some people who love their pool houses as much as they do their own home.  Why?  Because an amazing pool house or cabana can be the ultimate escape.  Quite frankly, I can sit in one and look at the water for hours.  It's that one place where you want to arrive with no agenda at all.  Simply sitting there and relaxing and enjoying yourself means you're doing just exactly what you should in one.  
 
 
 
Another great thing about a pool is that it provides such a fabulous focal point in your landscape design planning.   I've provided some ideas here just to get your creative juices flowing.  I love the way a mix of textures can play off the water.   And the only rule is that you end up with a comfortable place to sit for iced tea, a cocktail or dinner outside!  Yes, a pool is one of life's best Objet Petit a's, and we have many ideas here at Laura Lee Clark Interior Design to set you on the path to your perfect pool experience.
 
  
 
OK, I have a another weakness....and it's color around a pool.  Look at the red as an accent against the crystal blues and greens in the picture above.  And oh that view!  And a pool can be carved out of the most unusual places.  A once dead zone in your yard can suddenly become Grand Central Station for your family with a stunning and functional pool area.  
 
 
 
Another lovely thing about a pool is their ability to create a living "painting" on view at all times from the rest of your house.  I've seen an inspired pool, pool house and landscaping morph a once ordinary view from a living room into a simply stunning one.  And it becomes a perpetual "ahhhh!" moment for every occupant of the house.  Splendid!

]]> 2012-02-10 11:22:08 <![CDATA[Gorgeous Gardens!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/80/Gorgeous-Gardens!/ There are few things in life as soothing and comforting as a wonderful garden.  I just love them.  They are an endless vehicle to which you can apply creativity!  So when that perfect home is completed, and every design element is in its place....a very personal garden for you and your family is a splendid place to turn.  
 
 
 
I love to add a little whimsy to a garden.  A great garden should make you feel good! An unusual mix of colors?  Perfect. A great sculpture set in an unlikely place?  Even better.   But you don't have to have color in a great garden, it can be all green.  And with the moderate climate in Dallas,  your garden can be relatively easy to maintain too.  But get ready, you will fall in love with the process of creating it.  It's definitely one of life's great Objet Petit a's!!
 
 
 
One thing to remember when pulling together a garden.  There are no rules!  Make it individual,  and make sure it is something you will continually enjoy, and is an expression of who you are.  There is an incredible one in the new Architectural Digest that is devoid of color and it is beautiful and elegant.  And most people find that they absolutely love the process of tweaking it, running their hands through the soil, or simply spending time strolling through it.  Lovely!
 
 
 
One thing I almost always insist on having in a garden is a path.  Why?  Because it leads to everywhere, and nowhere...and is so relaxing and beautiful to look at.  And whether it is inspired by brick, stone,  gravel,  or anything in between, they are always special.  And you will find an inspired garden will draw you to it whenever you are feeling a need to escape.  Wonderful!
 
 
 
If there is one thing that I love even more than a path, it's a trellis.  Aren't they exquisite?  And nowhere is it more special to have a quiet dinner for two or a party for 100 than under a trellis in a great garden.  And they are relatively simple to pull together.  And talk about the gift that keeps on giving!
 
 
 
I know, I know.  The setting shown above looks like the perfect place for a glass of wine,  or to relax and do nothing.   And note the unusual mix of elements.  Stunning.  So remember,  of all of life's great adventures, a lovely garden is one of the best of them.  Start thinking about your perfect garden today.

]]> 2012-02-03 11:26:41 <![CDATA[Dallas is Shopping Heaven!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/79/Dallas-is-Shopping-Heaven!/ OK,  I'm sure we can all agree that Dallas is a wonderland on many levels.  But there's one area Dallas particularly shines in....SHOPPING!  And there are four honorable mentions that I want to make sure are on your "shop til you drop" list.  Only don't drop, because I don't want you to miss anything.  At Laura Lee Clark Interior Design,  you know we put our heart and soul into The Shop here on Dragon Street,  and in the process we know a thing or two about gorgeous and special things when we see it.   And that being said, we have been so inspired by a few other shops that step to the head of the class with everything wonderful and new.  And those are Grange Hall, Forty Five Ten, Nest Dallas and Mecox Gardens.  All excel well into the design stratosphere.  I love them all.  And the best part is, all are walking distance from the other! 
 
 
 
The first I want to talk about is Grange Hall.  It's on Travis Street in Knox-Henderson and it's fabulous.  No one is better with flowers, and their selection of unusual items is stunning.  So inspired, so NOT like anything you've ever seen before.  Gorgeous!  And if it's unusual flowers or arrangements you want,  they are infinitely creative and original.   Go there around noon and then stroll freely around this great area for an enjoyable lunch with a friend.  Hard to beat. 
 
 
 
Now, for those of you who have already been to Forty Five Ten on McKinney Avenue, you know full well what I'm about to say.  Incredible!  If you can't find something for yourself or for someone you love here, then it probably doesn't exist.  The selection is exceptional, and the display of everything so appealing and inspired.  I just adore it.  Clothes, jewelry, wonderful objects....all really fantastic.  And I love the T Room in back for lunch.  It's simply one of the best places in town for that relaxing lunch with a friend.  Don't miss it.
 
 
 
A stone throw away...also on McKinney Avenue....is Nest Dallas.  And let me tell you something, it is such a lovely store.  Elegant books, stationary, leather bags, furniture, and everything in between.   You can tell they really care about every single item on display.  It is like a candy store of brilliant design.  Open and airy, this new location is huge.  Plan to spend some time so you don't miss any of the inspired offerings.
 
 
 
And finally, let's definitely not forget Mecox Gardens on Cole Avenue.   They have the most beautiful selection of furniture, rugs, art, lamps and sculptural pieces.  It is such a great place to browse for just the right unique item for your home.  The staff is always so nice and helpful.  But what I really like about Mecox is that they leave you alone too,  so you can enjoy and take it all in at your leisure.  Really special.

]]> 2012-01-17 11:08:31 <![CDATA[We Love Papercity!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/78/We-Love-Papercity!/ There's no other way to say it....the magazine Papercity is fantastic!  It is so well done, isn't it?  It's like candy for the eye,  and I love every page.  We have advertised in it of late, and are so pleased.  Few publications do I want to read cover to cover, but this is one for sure.  And the gorgeous pages therein have often inspired us here at Laura Lee Clark Interior Design.  
 
 

I don't know their exact readership, but I think it's well over 80,000 people in Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston.  And quite frankly,  we're always proud to be in it.  It's an oversize and visually stunning magazine that appeals to those who appreciate fine quality, creativity and the now and the new.  I get so excited every time a new issue hits the stands at Starbuck's,  the grocery store,  or at better restaurants.  And when it does, I pounce on it.  Love it!  Such a fun read. 
 
 

Now, what is it with those Papercity covers?  Well, whatever it is, I like it.  They are so wildly dramatic and creative every single month.  You can tell someone puts great forethought and care into each one.  But they are just a hint of what's inside, the tip of the iceberg,  and each issue never disappoints. 
 
 

Many of us in the design community are nuts for the magazine.  And I never feel like I'm missing anything once I browse these pages each month.  And oh my, talk about a wonderland of gorgeous photography, great design, the newest products, the best new restaurants, the most creative shops.  All wonderful and artfully presented.

Gorgeous right?  And as you know from following my Blog,  I am a huge fan of nature in general.  I always mix natural elements into my work.   It's timeless, it's soothing, and it's wonderful.  And fresh flowers are hard to beat.  Flowers will always be in style, and they will always enhance mood and well-being every time you...or your guests...walk past them.  They are, quite frankly, one of life's great Objet Petit a's. 
 
 
 
 
 
Photography, another of my personal favorites,  is a remarkable thing.  Done right, and it can be utterly fantastic.  But please don't make me pick a favorite from this group of stunners, because I just can't.  I love them all.  And the great thing about flowers (and photography),  is that there are no rules.  Mix and match with abandon.  Some of the most beautiful floral arrangements I've ever seen are the ones where the human imagination has gone wild.  Same holds true for fine photography.  Love it.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Now, can you blame Monet for being so obsessed with water lilies?  His many water lily paintings have been bringing joy to the human race ever since he first painted them from his beloved Giverny in the early1900's.  And paint them he did,  over and over.  Each one unusual,  each one always lovely.   And if you want to see water lilies in person in Dallas, go to Lakeside Drive (just south of Beverly) in the spring and summer.  Oh my, they are stunning.  And there are so many there.   Incredible.

]]> 2012-01-09 10:58:05 <![CDATA[I've been framed!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/76/I've-been-framed!/ OK, so the headline is a little dramatic.  But it's true, I love old frames!  So in that sense I have been "framed" if you really want to know the truth.  But that doesn't necessarily mean for art, because you know I love contemporary art in all its glory just by itself.  But for mirrors?  A stunning old frame is hard to beat.  And they look fantastic mixed with modern elements.
 
 
 
Now, what is it about old frames that I love?  Try everything.  I love the patina,  the texture, the intricate shapes, the gold, the silver, the rich browns or a mix of all of the above.  Exquisite.  And quite frankly, sometimes a frame is so elegant and gorgeous that it looks good all by itself...leaned against a wall or on a mantel like sculpture.  Stunning!  
 
 
 
If you want to put me in a room full of old vintage frame choices, then you might as well just put me in Heaven.  Some can be so elegant and timeless no matter what your decor.  And of course you simply can't replicate what age can do so wonderfully to frames on its own.  Many were made with a mix of wood and plaster.  Some are carved, some are molded, some have fantastic gold leaf crackly finishes.  It's all such a fantastic treasure hunt.   And so pleasing to the eye.  A great old frame almost always results in positive comments, and a lovely addition to an inspired space for today.
 
 
 
So, for this New Year, one of my resolutions is to come in contact with even more of these one-of-a-kind treasures.  And you should too.   Trust me when I say that a gorgeous old frame is one of life's great Objet Petit a's.

]]> 2012-01-03 02:53:55 <![CDATA[Fabulous Floors!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/75/Fabulous-Floors!/ As with anything in life,  fine interior design is always about the whole package.  Gorgeous cabinetry requires a beautiful pull, a stunning chandelier takes center stage as long as there is an inspired  ceiling, and  an elegant dining table will step to the head of the class with just the right chairs.   Therefore, it's no surprise that an amazing rug will take an interior to new heights on an amazing floor!   So,  today  I want to take you on a tour of just a few of the possibilities for floors, of which there are many.  
 
 
 
 
 
Yes, the human imagination is limitless.  And yes,  the floor is a wonderful and sweeping blank canvas on which to work magic.   We always pay very special attention to flooring at Laura Lee Clark Interior Design, because it is such a large expanse for the eye.  A great floor can set off exquisite furniture...both old and new...in very special ways.   That being said, an inspired floor can be as simple as an expertly polished concrete,  or as complex as a unique pattern of stone, wood, marble or tile.  And in the end you must love the result.   We make sure of it.
 
 
 
 
OK, by now you may be thinking that floors are one of those categories where there are so many choices that you'll have a hard time deciding, right?   Not to worry, that's where we come in.  Through many years of experience, we know exactly what to recommend to fit the need.  We dream it up together, and then we make it happen.  We certainly love doing so.  And the great thing about having multiple rooms is that you can make multiple floor dreams come true! 
 
 
 
 
 
Now, you know how rules are sometimes made to be broken?  Well, a great floor can fall into this category too.  Certainly there are classic examples of timeless choices, but there is also plenty of room for new ideas as well.  Remember, never underestimate the human imagination.   For example, a painted pattern on a hardwood floor can be thoroughly classic and modern at the same time.  And a new texture or color or pattern on a time-honored material such as natural stone can be gorgeous too!  So no need to be shy....dream away.  And quite frankly, it's a highly enjoyable process to watch unfold into reality.

]]> 2011-12-21 11:32:39 <![CDATA[Elton John Holiday Candles are Here!!!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/74/Elton-John-Holiday-Candles-are-Here!!!/ If you know me, you know I love candles.  But I must confess....I am picky.  Not just any candle will do.  And let me tell you something, the new Elton John Holiday Candles are simply glorious.  And they're here at The Shop.  You must drop by for a look, and a smell.  So wonderfully done.  They are a wonderful for the holidays.  When I saw these for the first time I certainly had a "WOW" moment.  And many since then while enjoying them personally.
 
 
As seen in Lucky magazine in their December 2011 issue and W's Holiday Gift Guide, the candles are clearly made with much love and care.  Described as "a blend of evergreen and balsam fir needles combined with rich woods and a sparkling citrus accord"....oh my!  But I am here to tell you they live up to their description in fabulous ways.  The light and aromas they give off will capture you at hello.  They certainly did so for us.   They are very special. 
 
 
 
The substantial candles, which burn up to 60 hours, are the inspiration of Elton John and Laura Slatkin of Nest Candles.  And they have done a highly skilled job of it.  I mean, this is what quality looks, feels and smells like.  A portion of the proceeds go to the Elton John AIDS Foundation, so you can also feel very good indeed about them as you're enjoying their luscious scents.  Candles have a way of transporting us, don't they?  A wonderful candle can transport my mind from a beach in the south of France to a fountain in Rome to a sunset in Malibu without ever leaving my office chair.  Now that's what I call a holiday.  Lovely!
 
 
 
 
OK,  I suppose you can tell I'm a fan of these candles, right?    So make sure to drop by The Shop on Dragon Street before the holidays, because to open the door is to treat your senses to something very special.  We have the votive candle sets as well.  Amazing gifts, and the recipients of same for the holidays will surely thank you.  Or do what I do, I give them to myself.

]]> 2011-12-14 10:10:46 <![CDATA[The World of Unusual Staircases!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/73/The-World-of-Unusual-Staircases!/ Sometimes I simply like to celebrate the beautiful and the unusual.  And oh the world is filled with stunning staircases!  Human beings can be so creative that it's just thrilling to see.  And staircases can be lovely, functional and sculptural all at once.
 
 
 
 
Although some of these staircases might be a little tricky to navigate in heels, they are nevertheless like art, aren't they?  Stunning.  And so important, because a great staircase can be such a statement in a beautiful home.  I've seen some that simply take my breath away.
 
 
 
OK, by now you're realizing from these pictures that there are some WOW ways to redefine the staircase, right?   Some are certainly more elegant than others, but all infinitely creative.  The possibilities are limited only by your imagination and an endless variety of gorgeous materials.  
 
 
 
 
I must say, when I saw the staircase made of vintage suitcases shown above, it brought a smile to my face.  No one can ever accuse that designer of being boring.  It really is quite a visual, isn't it?  Practical?  Maybe not so much.  But I do find it highly creative and fun!  
 
 
 
 
 
As you can see, staircases can be doubly functional, such as the one with the bookcase built right into the side.  When you're not stepping on it, you're storing in it!  Very clever, and also quite sculptural.  And I love the use of glass in contrast with the grain of the beautiful solid wood in the steps of the one shown above.  A highly dramatic statement!
 
 
 
 
 
As shown in the white winding staircase shown above, the tree graphic provides quite an unusual statement as well.  And the curving and sculptural lines of the iron and wood custom staircase above is one of the most unusual I've seen.  And in the name of art, make sure to watch your step on this one! And all in all, these 10 dramatic staircases are quite the Objet Petit a's, aren't they?

]]> 2011-11-29 10:54:34 <![CDATA[Heavenly Highland Park Village!!!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/71/Heavenly-Highland-Park-Village!!!/ Oh my,  I am absolutely crazy for Highland Park Village.  But of course, who isn't, right?  It is simply spectacular in every detail!   The minute Ray Washburne took over is the minute things started looking particularly amazing at this Dallas cultural landmark!   Ray is brilliant with quality in the details,  and it shows.  Open any door over there and it's spotless and gorgeous.  The ever-evolving result is just a fantastic (and classic) experience from top to bottom.   As an interior designer, it is like a wonderland of ideas for me....and of shopping thrills!  I mean, I can walk around Highland Park Village for an hour and my mind is racing with new possibilities.   The stores, the design, the architecture, the history...all fabulous! 
 
 
 

Built in 1931, and notably the first open air shopping center in the nation, this Historic Landmark was intricately and lovingly built under the careful eye of architect Marion Fooshe.  The genius is as ever-present today as it was when it opened at the corner of Preston and Mockingbird in Dallas 80 years ago.  But question.  How do human beings set their sights so high and continually deliver?  I'm impressed, because Highland Park Village is testament to the powers of the human imagination.  Quite frankly, it's a stunning display of architecture and shopping at its finest.  And what's great about it is it's also filled with some of my favorite restaurants.  It is often where my clients for Laura Lee Clark Interior Design love to lunch, and plan, and talk, and simply luxuriate in all its splendor!   And I do mean LOVE to lunch too, and for that matter enjoy dinner with my husband John and our delightful daughter Ana.  Wonderful. 
 
 
 

OK, I want to give you a quick tour of some of the standout places there.  Why?  Because you deserve it, of course.  Good news should always travel fast.   And that being said,  life should not be lived without Madison at 45A Highland Park Village!  Fantastic monogram work, the ultimate place to go to find the perfect gift too.  A must stop for me.  Love the staff.  And I get so much inspiration for my own design business there.  Lovely place.  Don't miss it.  

 
 
 
Stop two simply must be Celebrity Bakery at 65 Highland Park Village.  Without doubt, they have some of the best sandwiches in Dallas, or anywhere for that matter.  And oh the desserts.  Don't get me started, because I do love my sweets.  But here they are splendid indeed.  They take sweets into the stratosphere!  
 

 
 
 
Would you like to guess how many times my clients and I have made our design choices over lunch at Mi Cocina at 77 Highland Park Village?  Well, don't try to guess, because it's a very big number.  We love Mi Cocina!   Excellent service, very special and happy atmosphere.  Upstairs is rather quiet for meetings, downstairs is alive with the thrill of friendly conversation and people...day in and day out.  And no, it's not just their famous margaritas creating all the buzz,  the food is very fresh and inspired.  Love it!
 
 

 
For dinner, honorable mention has to go to Marquee Grill at 33 Highland Park Village.  The interiors here are exquisite.  A very busy place to eat, particularly at night.   But fun and elegant!  The bar area is superb, the outdoor patio upstairs...superb yet again.  As a designer myself, this place always thrills both my eye and my taste buds.  Splendid!
 
 

A Dallas institution and simply extraordinary is Cafe Pacific at 24 Highland Park Village.  I mean, talk about luxury.  The food preparation, the service, the imaginative culinary choices....all  famous here.  Their quality is so outstanding that you can't even believe it.   You will simply never be disappointed with this restaurant that doubles as Dallas cultural masterpiece!  Is that a famous face at the table by the window?  Why, yes it is.  And right next to the table with the other famous face too!
 
 

Now, can we talk shopping?!  Good,  because nowhere does it shine quite like Highland Park Village.  And nowhere is it more stunning visually.  For a designer, it is a mecca of elegant and current and timeless ideas.   It's endless really, but honorable mention has to be the wonderful new Stella McCartney store  at 18 Highland Park Village.  She is so clever, isn't she?  Everything she designs is just so original.  And the store is great fun to visit.  Stella takes "keeping it fresh" to all new levels each season. 
 
 

A brand that never disappoints is Hermes at 21 Highland Park Village.  They are, quite simply, in a league of their own when it comes to luxury.  The store is gorgeous, the staff there fantastic.  And oh my....the scarves, the purses, the ties, the leather goods, the fragrances.    Their thrilling interpretations of luxury goods always fill me with that rush of what truly constitutes quality.  The materials, the textures, the simplicity.  Gorgeous!  Everything they make is a functionally wonderful fashion accessory for the now, but also a treasured collectible for the future!  That's hard to do.  And they do it on a breathtakingly marvelous scale!
 
 
 

With so many choices, there's simply not enough space in the entire blogosphere to list them all.  But trust me when I tell you that Highland Park Village is a joyous adventure.  The carriage rides during the holidays, the thrill of the staggeringly beautiful architecture, the comfort of Patrizios' patio on a beautiful afternoon, the clubby friendliness of probably the best Starbucks in the entire chain of Starbucks...it's all there.  And don't get me started about the gorgeous new store for Diane von Furstenberg!  Few understand style and what's fabulous better than DVF!  So thank you Highland Park Village from all of us at Laura Lee Clark Interior Design.  You are as fresh and wonderful today as you've ever been.

Laura Lee Clark]]> 2011-11-08 01:27:11 <![CDATA[A Trio of Treasures!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/70/A-Trio-of-Treasures!/ And what, might you ask, do I mean by A Trio of Treasures?  Well,  I mean Dallas Museum of Art,  Nasher Sculpture Center and Crow Collection of Asian Art all coming together in just one block of downtown Dallas, of course.  And quite frankly,  to take a day off and spend it touring  these illustrious cultural spaces is one of the most inspiring things you can do for yourself.  As you may know from reading my blog,  I am always so inspired by art in my own work....and the artistic wonders abundantly present in this one or two block area of Dallas is fantastic!  And I am not just talking quantity, I am talking spectacular quality too. The art within these walls, even at hundreds of years old,  will always excite me with new and exciting possibilities for the now and the new in interior design! 
 
 
 
At the Dallas Museum of Art, for example,  I am stunned by the beauty of the creamy yellows, the pale lavenders and the exquisite greens of Vincent van Gogh's  "Sheaths of Wheat" original painting on the second floor.   A showpiece painting (among many) in the wondrous Wendy and Emery Reves Mediterranean villa recreation within the museum itself, the painting hangs lovingly as if van Gogh just painted it yesterday.  Remarkably, the DMA has recreated much of the interior of this villa exactly as it was in their day.   The villa, originally built by Coco Chanel for herself, was sold to the Reves by her to use as their retreat on the French Riviera.  Chanel continued to visit it years after selling, as did other notables of the day.  The fine porcelain objects, place settings, art and furniture sit just as they were used back then.   A painting by Winston Churchill, a frequent visitor to the villa in his own lifetime, hangs just around the corner from the van Gogh (the Churchill is quite good!).  As an interior designer,  I marvel at how timeless a space such as this can be many decades later.  It is thrilling to see.  The DMA's modern galleries just below showcase an extensive collection of paintings by Modigliani, Picasso, Juan Gris, Monet and many others.  All breathtaking.    The choice of color, the angle of a human figure, the swish of a brush as if the artist just left the room, the look inside the soul of the painter in the eye of the resulting abstract form.  Oh my.   Is it just me or is standing in front of all the wonder at DMA simply one of life's greatest joys?   Amazing.
 
  
 
 
Across the street and less than one block away on Flora is the truly splendid Nasher Sculpture Center.  It isn't called the finest sculpture museum in the world for nothing.  It is startlingly well done.  The architecture alone is award-winning.  The collection?  Unrivaled.   If you haven't been there, it really is special and a must stop.  Sculpture has long been so inspiring to interior designers on so many levels.  Sculpture has inspired fine furniture design, the  lighting of a sculpture or painting has similarly inspired dramatic interior lighting,  inspired color combinations in art have resulted in the use of same in inspired interior spaces,  and of course an unusual patina or texture or material used in art OR interior design will always have me at hello.  And guess what?  It's all there in all its glory at  Nasher Sculpture Center at 2001 Flora in downtown Dallas.   The gardens there are magnificent too.  Artful fountains, sweeping landscapes, brilliant use of all nature has to offer at ever turn.   It will take your breath away.  Through every inch you soon realize you are among the finest sculpture in all the world, right here in Dallas!  Works by Picasso, Calder,  Brancusi.  It's endless really.  And all endlessly inspiring to us here in our own work over on Dragon Street.  Thank you Nasher Sculpture Center! 
 
 
 
 
 
 
OK, last but clearly not least is the oh-so-beautiful Crow Collection of Asian Art at 2010 Flora.  Literally right across the street again from both Nasher Sculpture Center and the main entrance to the DMA.  To walk through those doors is to walk into fine jade heaven, and very fine porcelain horse heaven!  And you know how I love my porcelain horses.  And these showcased here are hundreds upon hundreds of years old, and distinctly one of a kind and precious.  And it shows.    The Crow also possesses one of the greatest collections of jade and Asian masterworks in all the world.  There is a meticulously carved treasure out of a different stunning material virtually everywhere.   The snuff bottle collection on the 2nd floor is simply not to be missed.  Ancient craftsmen actually painted the INSIDE of some of the tiny and exquisite bottles with brushes by hand, some clearly with only one single fiber on the brush.  Unbelievable!  This extensive collection of snuff bottles includes colors as timeless in interior design now as they were over one thousand years ago.   Talk about Objet Petit a's.  Don't miss it.  Oh those colors, I'll never tire of them.  The Crow Collection of Asian Art is spectacular!
 
 
 
 
 
By now you know what I mean by a trio of treasures.  But don't take my word for it, experience these three fabulous cultural spaces for yourself.  Take an entire day and find your reward to be an endless treasure trove of creative energy of your own.  I know I never tire of what these three marvelous institutions deliver in every inch of their vast halls.  And although vast as they are, you somehow walk away with the feeling that they staged it all just for your own personal enjoyment.  And you know why?  It's because they did.  And here at Laura Lee Clark Interior Design, we are thoroughly thankful to each of them....as they will always inspire us.

]]> 2011-11-01 01:36:34 <![CDATA[In the Clear!!!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/69/In-the-Clear!!!/ There is a material I love so much that works in almost any decor.  Whether traditional or modern  or anywhere in between, acrylic is fabulous!  And it is so versatile it is just unbelievable.  

 
 


How versatile you might ask?  There are many examples of exquisite coffee tables, stunning lamps, fantastic legs to a wonderful sofa or chair, over the top as dining table bases and timeless and elegant prisms.   I love to put a gorgeous piece of acrylic into the mix...and the result is always classic.  

 
 


In terms of care, it's relatively easy.  And lasts forever.  But NEVER use Windex on acrylic as it will absorb and cause a film and cracking over time.  Only use a cleaner specifically for acrylic.  Other than that it will stay as beautiful as the day you acquired it.  

 


There is another wonderful thing about acrylic pieces.  They are here to stay!  Acrylic has been used in fine interior design for many years and retains it's star status and luster.  And it's also one of those things that will garner many nice and enthusiastic comments from guests.  


  

So, by now you can see that I highly recommend acrylic.  It is a versatile material that when used tastefully is a wonderful Objet Petit a indeed!  We have many selections of it at The Shop on Dragon Street.  And my imagination is always running wild for new and exciting uses.

In a world where many things are black and white, doors are simply not!  They are as unique and creative as they can possibly be.  I love it that they all tell an interesting story too.  Doors are one of those splendid categories of things that only get better with age!  Some doors, such as those shown here, are simply majestic in every detail.  

 
 


 

You know that saying "if walls could talk" you've heard so often?   I've often wondered about the doors as well.  Some are centuries old and still in use, so you can imagine how many times they've opened up lives to new adventures,  or closed from illustrious lives well-lived.  All in all they are time capsules that continue to beautifully celebrate the lives associated with them. 

 
 
  


Certainly the primary purpose of doors are to open and close and block out the outside world... and in the process give you peace and comfort in your home.  But some doors are so gorgeous they are art pieces, exquisite in every detail.   And some doors may be transformed into wall sculpture, tables and other artful decorative uses.  

 
 
 


OK, can we talk patinas!   Doors possess some of the most illustrious I've ever seen.  Exposure to the elements of sun, water, wind and all things in between give them a spectacular "lived-in" finish.   Some doors are like that favorite old grandfather who you wouldn't change a thing about for all the money in the world!   

 
 

 

As I always say, I love it when there are no rules!  And doors fit warm and fuzzily into that category.  And doors to a beautiful home do not have to always match the period of the architecture.  Sometimes it's so interesting to mix it up.  I mean, if a door is beautiful, it's probably going to be beautiful almost anywhere.

Natural themes will always be elegant, soothing....and gorgeous.  And few things in nature are as exquisite as Precious coral, commonly known as red coral.  And whether it's the natural coral or an artistic  glass interpretation of it, it is something that will always receive glowing comments from guests.  When all is said and done, coral is the best sculptural work of the very fine artist known as Mother Nature.

 
 


Red coral has been used in jewelry, sculpture and interior design for hundreds of years.  Composed of intermeshed spicules of hard calcium carbonate from the sea floor, they are glamorously colored in shades of red by carotenoid pigments.  They look like small, leafless and highly stylized bushes.  No two are ever alike....so thus my passionate love for it!  

 
 


Naturally matte, red coral may be polished to a high sheen, rendering it timeless in appeal.    In fact, polished red coral jewelry has been found in ancient Egyptian and European royal burial sites.  And they look as if they were made yesterday. 

 
 
  


For the home,  the rules for using red coral are limited only by your imagination.  I love to place fine pieces on top of exquisite boxes, or on a beautiful book, or even alone on a coffee or console table.  Spectacular!

]]> 2011-10-04 12:08:03 <![CDATA[BY THE BOOK!!!!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/63/BY-THE-BOOK!!!!/ OK, elegant and artful coffee table books are amazing!  And they are an endless source to pull from when arriving at just the right look and feel for a space.  But of course books have long left the isolation of simply sitting on a bookshelf.  Now there are simply no rules, and no limits for their use!  They have come front and center  for fine design, and they're here to stay.    On a table with a gorgeous vase on top of them?  Lovely.   Sitting on an ottoman with a gorgeous piece of natural coral?  Superb.   Or simply sitting alone by themselves?  Stunning.  

 
 


We LOVE interesting and beautiful coffee table books here.  We have very special ones all over The Shop, and we virtually always use exquisite ones in our interior design work for clients.  Books are all at once sculptural, homey, interesting.  They draw you in.  And they give a room a sense of history, and of a life (and house) well-lived.    

 
 


A fine book that you keep forever is put together with careful quality and detail.  I personally love to run my hand over a beautifully bound one.  And books always transcend time and actually become even more beautiful over time.  I have books from all chapters of our family history.  And they are divine in their visual appeal, and divine in their richness of memories.  

 
 


The nice thing about collecting books is that there are no rules, and you simply can't make a mistake.  Mix and match in virtually any way you choose,  and somehow they work!  And the more eclectic the mix the better.  Mix architecture books with books about painting,  travel books  with books about sculpture, history books with spectacular picture books of nature.  Or whatever suits your fancy.  I personally love to place interesting vases and bowls on stacks of books.  And people almost always comment.  I also love to place books on console tables beside lamps and porcelain horses, or lined interestingly along a shelf with unusual objects such as shells separating a mix and match of them.

]]> 2011-09-29 02:47:19 <![CDATA[No Ordinary Candle!!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/62/No-Ordinary-Candle!!/ What is it about candles?  To me, they are in that joyous category like listening to the waves by a beach,  or enjoying a gorgeous crimson sunset, or experiencing the thrill of dolphins gliding along the surface of the sea.  It's all just so peaceful, isn't it?  And quite frankly, priceless!   Candles take me away this same way.  Candles encourage me to be reflective, they calm me after a busy day, they inspire me to just relax and remember all that I have to be thankful for.    And it is for all these reasons that we carry some very special candles in The Shop.  Because if candles can bring this kind of therapy to you too, then they should be very special indeed!  So that is our goal here, to carry some really fine ones.  

 
 


The right candle not only gives off a subtle and yet lovely scent, it also projects just the right light.  A great candle lasts for quite some time too, and it is beautiful to look at....both when lit and when simply sitting there in your home.  I will always adore a beautiful candle.  They are definitely a very special Objet Petit a!  And I never tire of the wonderful and uplifting gifts they bring to me time and again.

Oh the power of the pillow.  Mixing and matching pillows in creative ways is one of those wonderful  things you can do to deliver a powerful design punch to a room in a hurry.  Want to reinvent, want to wow factor a room, want to implement an out-with-the-old and in-with-the-new show stopper?  Well,  simply changing the pillows is an interesting and good start. 
 
 

There are so many stunning designs, with new and exciting ones virtually everywhere you go.    Pillows are beautiful and functional all at the same time.   I love comfort.  I love pattern.  I love graphic design.  Therefore I love pillows!  These little windows to the design world are an accessory which will never lose their transformational quality.  And of course they serve that obvious second purpose as a safe place to rest your weary head after a long day.  Watching a favorite program from the comfort of a graphically inspired comfy pillow?  Heaven.  And what's also so great is that it's fun to mix and match elegant patterns to change things up to fit your mood or design sensibility.
 
 

To me, pillows are like our moods.  One minute we might be in a whimsical mood, another a bit more serious one.  But whether whimsical or seriously luxe, a beautiful pattern always has me at hello!   A stunning pattern can so effectively tie a bedroom together here, a family room there, a formal library over there.   So don't be afraid to implement a little of your own pillow magic when it's time for a change.

Laura Lee Clark]]> 2011-09-14 02:06:59 <![CDATA[The Joy of the Hunt!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/59/The-Joy-of-the-Hunt!/ OK, I have a confession to make.   One of the biggest joys for me in what I do is the hunt.  I simply love the process of hunting for something unique and special for a client.  Is it the look on their face when they see it for the first time?  Probably.  That thrill will never get old for me.  And remember, I love Show and Tell.  


 
 

But what's so great about this hunt is that it is always unfolding, and the one minute you think you've seen it all?  VOILA!  There's something that blows you away like never before.    But the process is like a roller coaster ride for me.  I'll find one thing that thrills me, and then immediately want to start hunting for another.  Oh, but what a lovely thing to be addicted to.   A fabulous vessel, an exotic chandelier, a one-of-a-kind candlestick, a set of unusual bells as sculptural installation,  a porcelain object so delicate and gorgeous that you can't keep your eyes (and hands) off it.  Or what about that new artist who redefines creativity on every level like I've never seen it before?!  Oh my.  Sign me up.  I just love it.  

 
 


Now, when you find objects that step up to the standard of Objet Petit a, know that they'll work almost anywhere.  A wonderful vessel that once worked on a coffee table can morph into a perfect addition as a bookend or orchid surround later.  I like to choose things that families keep for generations.  "I love that because it reminds me of my mother...." can be the most wondrous and timeless compliment of all! 

 
 


So,  let the hunt begin.  And the world is one big treasure hunt that keeps on giving, and evolving, and surprising.  There are more choices now that ever before.  In fact, right here in Dallas I find that there are sumptuous choices.  And fabulous finds don't have to be expensive either.  The fact that you love it is what matters most.

]]> 2011-09-07 10:33:49 <![CDATA[Nothing is more elegant than nature!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/58/Nothing-is-more-elegant-than-nature!/ Nothing is more timeless and exquisite than nature.    And by now you know that  I  mix natural elements into my work anywhere possible.  It's so soothing, it's beautiful, and it makes you feel so good!   Virtually everyone loves natural themes.   I enjoy introducing unusual uses of shells, exotic stones, crystals and exotic wood formations into my interiors.  And yes, you probably guessed it.  They never go out of style.  

 
 


Now, let's talk specific ideas.  There are so many different ways to incorporate natural elements into fine design.  There are no rules either, and you can let your imagination be your guide.  I love placing fresh flowers inside giant clam shells for a dramatic dining table, or inside conch shells for a gorgeous touch on a fireplace mantle, or a loosely carved wood bowl filled with green apples.  I also enjoy incorporating live orchids with drop dead gorgeous sea shells as the container.  The result?  A guaranteed comment from all your guests at your next dinner party.

 
 


But natural elements do not have to have a specific function either.  Some are wonderful as a standalone object as sculptural piece.  Coral is the perfect example, and it fits in anywhere!  Either go wild with color with red or pink coral, or stark white for a similarly dramatic touch.   Or that cleverly placed Nautilus shell you found on your last walk on the beach of your family vacation?   Yes, that beautiful memory on display on a coffee table will never go out of style either.

 
 


So remember, nature is the world's finest of fine art.

]]> 2011-09-02 04:34:36 <![CDATA[Let's Celebrate Color!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/57/Let's-Celebrate-Color!/ If you know me, you know that I am so inspired by color.  Arriving at the right color palette is one of the hallmarks of my work that I am proud of...and I take it very seriously.  But don't get me wrong, because by "serious" I do not mean we won't  have a good time with it.  Because we will.   And after all, you have to live with it, so the end result must be very  special, elegant, make you feel good,  and inspire you too!

 
 


The wonderful thing about color is that ultimately there are no  rules.  Certainly through listening to the client I will start to develop a color point of view  after I meet with them for the very first time.  But the process evolves over time together.   And combinations are limited only by our collective imaginations.  Throughout this Blog, I'll provide several color choices which I find to be particularly special, although by no means does this imply  that these are our only choices.  Color is one of those things where you know it when you see it, and it must match the personality of you and your family.    And arriving at that special balance is the part that I find most satisfying.  

 


What I also find so interesting about color is that it's the combination that matters. One single color might not work at all alone, but mix it with a complementary shade and it's simply amazing.  This journey getting there that I talk about is almost always as thrilling as the final color destination we reach together for a home.   Often, less is more with paint colors,  as accessories pull the colors' strong suit to the surface in vivid and exciting ways when the interior is complete.  

 
 


Now that we can agree that color is so important, I must say that I often find that one can never go wrong when choosing colors inspired by nature.  Sometimes you can't quite put your finger on it, you just know  that a color has an organic sensibility  about it when you see it.  It is from this base that you can almost never go wrong.  Mix and match throughout the seasons at will,  and an organic base of colors will frame and set it off perfectly.  And by organic I do not simply mean beige.  I mean all the spectacular colors to choose from now which meet this timeless definition! 

 
 


At Laura Lee Clark Interior Design, this is part of the fun of it for us.  We so enjoy going on this color treasure hunt with a client.   And one thing I will always know to be true....we always find it together.   Yes, life is simply wonderful on it's own....but even better with color.

There is something about the thrill of viewing sculptural forms which never loses luster for me.  And my favorite sculptural artist in  all the world we all know very well.  And that's Mother Nature!  And she creates the most beautiful sculptures anywhere in the form of  succulents and orchids.  And this is sculpture which will never go out of style!
 
 

Succulents are stunning, aren't they?  So very unusual.  And so easy to maintain and enjoy either inside or outside the home.  I love them indoors.  They make such a lovely design statement.  And they can be mixed and matched in the most wonderful ways.  They may also be mixed with flowers, or potted creatively for a very artistic and unusual look.  Succulents are limited only by your imagination.
 
 

If low maintenance is a requirement, then succulents are ideal.  If you take a trip and can't water them for a week or two, they will be fine.  Some have stunning color combinations, exquisite and exotic shapes and twists and turns.  Jades, reds, yellows and everywhere in between.  At The Shop here at Laura Lee Clark on Dragon Street, you will almost always see us with arrangements featuring unusual succulents.  I find that the more striking and unexpected your use of them, the merrier.  Guests will almost always comment favorably.
 
 

Although a little more difficult to maintain than succulents, orchids are nevertheless quite easy and definitely deliver that WOW visual impact as well.  If not even more so.  They are Mother Nature's highest art form in my view.  Some defy the imagination in their grandeur, texture and color.  So simple, so special.  Place a beautiful orchid in any part of the room, and that is where the eyes of your guests will travel.  If there is a person on this earth who does not love orchids, I simply haven't met them yet.  
 
 

I enjoy mixing orchids with succulents, moss, stones and unusual pots.  Orchids will always work with any decor, and they bring me great joy just to walk past them throughout my day.  I have had some orchids bloom for months and months, without ever losing a bit of their vibrancy.  The different varieties are too extensive to list here, but know that there are many spectacular ones. 

 
 
So, in a world where beauty can give us a temporary and much needed reprieve from our busy lives,  start a small collection of either succulents and/or orchids of your own.   You might just find that you are suddenly hooked.  I find both to be some of  Mother Nature's most wonderful treasures and a very elegant addition to any home design.

]]> 2011-07-14 02:32:10 <![CDATA[The Splendor of Chinese Ceramics!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/55/The-Splendor-of-Chinese-Ceramics!/ Chinese ceramics are some of the most beautiful and elegant objects on earth.  It is also one of the most important forms of Chinese art, and they have been practicing the craft dating back almost 18,000 years.  These are stunning pieces for any decor, and highly valuable.  Many museums and collectors cherish these objects, and for good reason.  They are beautiful and timeless.

 
 


What was considered the first form of porcelain came from the Han Dynasty, 202 BC-220 AD.  Known for some of the first kilns, these pieces were fired at high temperatures and are exquisite and highly prized.  If you own a piece, guard it with your life! Many of these pieces are as exquisite today as they were when they were created.

 
 
 
 


The next dynasties were the Sui and Tang Dynasties of 581-907. These were periods of low-fired and high-fired ceramics which produced three color glazed pieces and the highly sought after lime-glazed Yue celadon wares.  Although made of clay, they were known to be almost as transparent as glass in some cases, and water could be seen through some of these amazing pieces.  


  
 
 

Immediately following the Sui and Tang dynasties, the Song and Yuan Dynasties emerged 960-1368.  During this period, porcelain made in southern China used crushed and refined pottery stones alone. It was here that Imperial porcelain took root.  

 
 


 

Following Song and Yuan Dynasties, the illustrious Ming dynasty emerged from 1368-1644.  This was a period of much innovation and new design.  Whiter bodies emerged, more strength was created, and kaolin and pottery stone were mixed in in equal measure.  The magnificent blue and white pieces emerged.  As the result, Ming dynasty pieces are extremely valuable and collectible.  Some pieces have sold for many millions of dollars.

 
 
 
 


And finally, the Qing dynasty of 1644-1911 produced new innovations in firing and glazing and the refining of China clay kaolin. Throughout the dynasties, there are many types of porcelain wares, such as Tang Sancai burial wares, Jian tea wares, Ding ware, Ru ware, Jun ware, Guan ware, Ge ware, Qingbai ware, Blue and White wares and Blanc de Chine.

I have long been a huge fan of glazed horses.  They are sculptural, peaceful, elegant and uplifting all wrapped up into one.  I get the same feeling when I see a horse that I do when I'm beside the ocean.  Wonderful!  And natural themes, of course, will never go out of style in fine interior design.

]]> 2011-07-05 11:15:15 <![CDATA[Experience "The Shop" at Laura Lee Clark!!!]]> http://lauraleeclark.com/Blog/Post/51/Experience-"The-Shop"-at-Laura-Lee-Clark!!!/ Do you remember Show and Tell from grade school?  I do, and I always loved it.  And quite frankly, I still do.  And I can tell Laura Lee Clark loves it too, because "The Shop" at 1615 Dragon Street is a marvel for the eye at every turn.  Wow!  The minute you walk in there, you can tell that someone really cares deeply about creating a beautiful experience for you.  

 
 


If you have already been by Laura Lee Clark's space, then you know.  But if you haven't, make a beeline for it.  It's really special.    What I particularly love about The Shop is it is ALWAYS evolving.   It's like an adventure through the  best and the brightest of the design world.  There are treasures that let you know loud and clear that Laura Lee Clark takes her work very seriously, but also has fun with it.  The selection is exquisite, yes.  But there is also great value to find there too.  Everything in there you can see yourself actually touching, enjoying, living with  in your home!

 
 


Although I love everything in The Shop, there are a few honorable mentions. There is a door with a red/orange patina and interesting hardware which is simply breathtaking.  Very unusual and elegant.  And if you love timeless white marble like I do, there is a large marble top table with an ornate and sculptural iron base that is simply stunning.  Is it the marble that looks like it came right out of The Plaza Hotel in New York or the stunning iron work that excite me so much?  OK, you guessed it...it's both.  

 
 


I also really love the way Laura Lee mixes succulents, orchids, sea shells and coral.  And the heavily glazed horses are simply must haves and will work in every decor.  I don't know how she does it, but when I'm in there I get that feeling I get when I'm at the beach, or walking through Central Park, or traveling to some exotic locale.  You know that feeling?  It's like AHHH...now this is nice!!

 
 


Open from 9 to 5, I highly recommend dropping by.  It's always a visual treat. Laura Lee Clark, I can't decide if  your pleasant personality or your amazing design talent is at the top of my favorite list.  So I've decided that it's both!

Welcome to my first Blog post on our brand new website www.LauraLeeClark.com!   Collectively we have had a wonderful time creating a fresh Web presence with an elegant design and user-friendly functionality.   All of us here at Laura Lee Clark Interior Design intend for our new site to be an ongoing celebration of sophisticated design.  I hope you enjoy it, and I also hope our passion for design shows on every single page.   

 
 

  

Like our design sensibility,  I want our new website to always embrace and showcase a mix of old and new, modern and classic,  and an inspiring mix of finishes, fabrics, custom-designed furnishings and antiques.    Pictures will always be worth a thousand words, so there are plenty provided.   It's so important to us that your travels through our new site  continually remind you of the joys of  fine design.  And that being said,   your comments will always be important to us!   We will immediately share these comments with all of our dedicated team members here,  as well as with our web designer Gabe Macias of The Old State House of Web Design & Development.   

 
 


On the new Blog,  it will be  fresh  with interesting ideas you will not find anywhere else.  For this reason,  we chose the exotic French term "Objet Petit a" as the title.  It is a term rooted in all of our desire to seek out and celebrate the unusual.  In fact,  in the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan from the 1950's, "Objet Petit a" stood for the "unattainable" object of desire.    But I loved the response I received from my French friend when I asked her to define the term "Objet Petit a".  She said, "Oh that just means a fabulous little thing!"  For our new Blog theme?  Perfect.   The only difference here being we will show you how illustrious objects are,  in fact,  "obtainable".  You see, life is not short.  It's full and wonderful!  Particularly so when surrounded by exquisite things which bring you joy and pleasure.   We fully intend to amaze you over and over with just such finds from around the world here.  So make sure to visit www.LauraLeeClark.com and the "Objet Petit a" Blog often for fresh discoveries of treasure from corners far and wide!  And of course, at "The Shop" at 1615 Dragon!
